The Allen Scholars (2022)
This collaborative film examined the history and ongoing impact of the Allen Scholarship program.
Named after Rev. Clarence Beecher Allen–the first African American man to graduate from The College of Wooster in 1892–the scholarship was awarded to students of African descent who demonstrated academic excellence and leadership. In recent years, the program has faced pressures to revitalize their qualification standards in light of shifting national conversations surrounding higher education and equity.
Through conversations with past faculty, including former director of Multicultural Student Affairs, Lillian Evans, and then junior scholar recipient Liam Walker, the film highlights both the challenges and hopes surrounding the scholarship–how it continues its legacy as a prestigious award for African American students at a private liberal arts college, and how its mission might endure into the future.
